FlamepeltFlamepelt sat outside the warriors den his pelt bristled from the morning cold, he had been woken up not too long ago by a couple of noisy warriors who should have been more thoughtful. Looking around the camp he noticed that other cats were beginning to appear from their dens heading towards where the deputy was sitting giving out the day’s tasks. Flamepelt purred softly, he had just seen the deputy and was glad to know he would be taking Steadypaw out on his first hunting patrol his tail twitched in excitement. Steadypaw was the ginger warriors first apprentice he was so proud at being named his mentor he wanted to do his best. Padding over towards the fresh-kill pile he picked out a small mouse, remembering his failed hunting patrol yesterday he did not want to seem greedy today he was prepared to do much better. He gave a yawn he wished he was back in his warm nest in the den but there was no way he could get back to sleep now with all the noise.

Sorry for the late reply ) Steadypaw's tailed flicked in his sleep, and his right ear twitched a moment before he started to stir, Lifting his head, he suddenly remembered that his new mentor, Flamepelt, would most likely be waiting for him outside. He hurried to his feet, licked down a few bits of messy fur and exited the apprentices' den with their head held high. As a kit, he never felt very good about himself due to his 'birth effect', but he was determined to change that as he trained hard and long with the ginger warrior. Looking around, he noticed some of the senior warriors hurrying to and fro, talking and eating freshkill. He purred at the peace and tranquility found in the clan, it wasn't always like this of course, but at least it was nice today. Looking around once more, he noticed an orange shape near the warriors' den, Steadypaw headed over.

FlamepeltThe Ginger tom’s eyes scoured the camp he took another bite from his mouse the camp had become more alive now with the movement of cats. He noticed other cats heading out together on their patrols some kits where already awake and playing by their den. His mind drifted on where to take Steadypaw out on his hunting trip, a good place to find food was a group of bushes not far from camp maybe he’d have better luck hunting. Looking back around the camp he noticed his apprentice had gotten up and was heading towards him flicking his tail happily he knew this would be a good day.

Steadypaw padded quickly over to his mentor, noticing the fact that Flamepelt looked thoughtful and proud; two greatly needed traits for a good warrior and mentor. As he neared, Steadypaw dipped his head in greetings and sat down next to him, his eight-toed paws tucked neatly under his tail, which now rested in front of him. " Hello Flamepelt, I would just like to state how delighted I am to be training under such a respected warrior such as yourself." He mewed. {Hopefully I didn't over do my greeting?} He thought quickly.

Flamepelt{Sorry for my late reply} Flamepelt purred in amusement “I’m not that respected.” He gave his tail a flick towards the fresh kill pile. “You better get something to eat I don’t want to waste any more time when we could be out hunting.” His paws itched to be out of camp and into the forest though he did not want to be hard on his apprentice if it was him he would be out already. The sun had risen quite a bit since he had been up and he was getting bored waiting around though he was wanting to tech his apprentice the importance of getting up early to help the clan.

Very sorry for EXTREMELY late reply, school and whatnot) *Steadypaw dipped his head in acknowledgement of the older warrior's words* {I wonder if I should get Flamepelt a piece as well?} *thinking as he padded over to the freshkill pile, he thought about it some more* His mentor had seemed keen to get into the woods* *He took a whiff of the freshkill, the delicious aroma of tender meat made him even more hungry, he spotted a rather plump sparrow and sat down with his meal, enjoying every bit of it* *He looked over at his mentor* Would you like some freshkill as well before we leave? *The apprentice mewed*

Flamepelt "I’ve just eaten,” The ginger warrior bowed his head in thanks towards the apprentice. “Don’t worry about me just be quick we’re wasting daytime.” He was new to having an apprentice it would take time to get used to not being able to go out whenever he wanted. The ginger warrior remembered his mentor saying that having an apprentice taught the warrior patience and understanding to his fellow clan mates. Flamepelt flicked his tail impatiently watching Steadypaw with the prey.

*He nods his head slightly* Very well then *Steadypaw snatched a few more stringy pieces of the delicious meat and stood again, tail flicking in excitement for what the new day would hold* *After he licked his lips a few times, he looked out towards the exit of their camp, his eyes bright* We'll leave by your word I presume? *Looking back at his mentor, he noted his tail flicking in eagerness to leave camp*

Flamepelt Flamepelt purred “You’re very formal for an apprentice aren’t you? Don’t worry about it I’d rather we be normal around each other than putting on a show.” His eyes turned towards the entrance of the clan. Standing up he led the way he was ready to run out into the woods when he remembered to keep it slow. “Well you already know the entrance to the camp, come on I’ll show you the best place to hunt for mice and voles.” He weaved expertly through the trees his ginger pelt blended surprisingly into the thicket. He knew the woods like the back of his paw he was excited to teach his apprentice all about them.

*At his remark about his formalities, he nodded and padded after Flamepelt as they left the clearing* {AM I trying to hard...?} *He asked himself* *Noticing his mentor's ease when weaving through the territory, Steadypaw did his best to copy him. Stepping lightly; which didn't prove to be very easy due to his extra toes, treading at a fast pace, and keeping his ears pricked for anything that might sound like prey* *Steadypaw's mother had told him that prey; underground, usually sounded like muffled tapping, or scurrying. She also said that when hunting, it was best to keep your tail low to the ground, but not touching is as to stir the undergrowth and frighten the prey away* *Following her instruction, he kept his tail lower and tried to focus on the sounds of the forest*

Flamepelt He was impressed by the apprentice’s control through the forest he had always found it annoying when he missed a step and stood on a stray branch. His ears priced when he noticed movement in the distance. “Let’s see how you do with hunting. There looks to be a mouse or something over there. Can you try and catch it?” His whispered cautious as to not disturb the prey. The ginger warrior wanted to see how he did before he could help the apprentice to improve.

Tis fine X3)
*Steadypaw hadn't even noticed their mentor's error when they tripped, only taking it as a simple thing* {I wonder when we'll spot something-}*He also heard the scuffle in the undergrowth* {Now's my chance!} *The apprentice's thoughts were cut off by Flamepelt's voice, to which he luckily heard all of what he said* Alright then *he whispered back* *Steadypaw honed his ears in on the area the prey was seen and heard* *Lowering his body, he crept forwards, his shoulders tense, ready to strike, and his back legs stretching out silently behind him, he tried very hard to make as little noise as possible* {C'mon, I can do this you big scaredy-mouse...}*When he picked up the sound again, he could see the small body of a mouse, nibbling away at a seed, it's back to him* {Perfect} *He grinned silently and stepped forwards, however, he failed to notice the small patch of dried grass to his right and accidentally swept a paw through it. The light sound alerted the mouse and it dashed out of sight into it's small burrow, only about a foot away* Mouse dung! *He cursed in a loud whisper* {Great job you lousy oaf...}

| Flamepelt purred in amusement checking if his apprentice was okay. “Don’t worry not every cat can catch a mouse on their first try, I sure didn’t.” He mewed trying to make his apprentice feel better. “Keep an eye on where you place your paws even uneven ground can cause you to trip not just leaves and twigs.” The ginger warrior headed back through the undergrowth. “No point in giving chase that mouse is alert and will spot us easily.” He flicked his tail to the bushes in front of him.

Oooh I like it ) *The apprentice looks at where the mouse was just moments before, then nods at his mentor's words, turning to follow him* I suppose your right *he said neutrally* {I'll just have to try even harder and be more careful next time!} *Steadypaw thought to himself brightly* Where do I start next then? Any specific places where prey is easiest to find? *He suddenly remembered something* {You mouse brain, there's already a prey shortage, of course there's not going to be a place where prey is EASY to find.}

| He shook his head paying no attention to the apprentice’s mistake. “Usually the forest is full of prey when my mentor took me out it wasn’t abnormal for us to get two pieces between us.” He sighed heavily, every cat was worried about the prey shortages and since it was becoming harder to spot any on a patrol some cats had resorted to stealing on other territories. Hearing another noise he twitched his ears towards the direction of the scuttling. “I’ll catch this one, it may be easier for you to watch and see how I do it.” Flamepelt didn’t want to be condescending to his apprentice but he remembered learning best from watching another cat do it.
He dropped to his belly stalking quietly and quickly towards his prey. He noticed another mouse at the corner of his eye. He silently cursed, something bigger would have been much better for the clan, but every little helps. As he got closer to the rodent he shuffled in the grass quickly pouncing, killing the creature. He walked back to Steadypaw with the prey, happy they caught something. | |
